Fresh out of grad school with a degree in Modern Art History, Theory, and Criticism, I was DESPERATE to work at an arts magazine. The rub? Chicago only had one of those at the time, The New Art Examiner, and it wasn't hiring. So, I took matters into my own hands and learned to publish and edit my OWN arts and culture magazine, TENbyTEN. It was a plucky, independent, seat-of-your-pants, quarterly-ish publication that I ran as a side hustle for six years, five of which with an all-volunteer staff and contributors. We covered art, architecture, design, and fashion trends from Chicago and beyond, producing nine issues in all. I learned the ins and outs of running a small business, how to be a good editor, the pros and cons of an Oxford Comma, and I loved every minute of it!
